Generic Conventions For Horrors

Mis En Scene

Usually set in isolated areas where there is no one to help the characters/no where for them to run too. 
Everything is normally dark, dirty and dilapidated. 
Normally a fight scene between supposedly friendly characters as tension runs high. 
Chase scenes where characters are unsure of what they are running from and cannot escape anyway.
Woods.

Characters

Creepy adult character who scares/intimidates the teenage victims.
Normally teenagers aged 18+ not usually older than 25. 
Creepy child who scares the adult characters. 
Male who dies first due to his self-absorption. 
Dim witted, promiscuous blonde girl who never survives, due to lack of common sense. 
Attractive male who is brave and usually dies trying to save others. 
Geeky character who think they know everything and normally do, but are ignored until the end.
Shy overly scared character, who normally dies at the end because of their panic actions. 
Unknown character that kills people off in disturbing ways. 

Narrative

A play on common fears, blurring the line between fantasy and reality. 
A struggle of good against evil.
Evil forces, events or characters sometimes of supernatural origin intruding into the everyday world. 
Designed to make the audience jump, feel shocked, uncomfortable, disturbed and frightened. 

Sound Lighting

Creepy sounding backing track.
Diegetic sounds like footsteps, echoes and screams.
